Poker Terms
Baby A small card, typically a five or smaller.
Back Door A hand that was made in the last card or two (most often a straight or flush) that the player was not originally planning on having.
 
Backer A non-player who finances an active player.
 
Backraise A re-raise from a player who originally called.
 
Back-to-back

In Stud Poker, a pair dealt on the first two cards.

 
Bad Beat A hand that is beaten by a lucky draw. A loss in which the losing player had the better odds than the winning player earlier in the hand. It is generally used to imply that the winner of the pot had no business winning the hand and won by luck.
 
Bad Game A game in which you expect to be the loser because the other players are better than you.
 
Bait A small bet that encourages a raise.
 
Bank Where the money is kept from purchased chips.
 
Banker The person who is responsible for selling and cashing chips.
 
Bankroll The total amount of money you have available as gambling funds.
 
Barn A full house.
 
Barracuda A tough player.
 
Base Deal When a cheater deals from the bottom of the deck.
 
Baseball A stud poker game with nines and threes as wild cards.
 
Baskin Robbins The starting hand of ace and three.
 
Beans Another word for poker chips.
 
Beer Hand Considered the worst starting hand in Hold'em, consisting of two and seven. As in "time for a beer".
 
Belly Hit When a draw fills an inside straight.
 
Belly-Buster Straight Another word for inside straight.
 
Berry Patch An extremely easy game.
 
Best Flush Poker game where only flushes win the pot.
 
Bet To put money or chips into the pot.
 
Bet the Limit To bet the maximum amount allowed in a Limit game.
 
Bet the Pot To bet an amount equal to the amount of chips in the pot.
 
Bet the Raise The maximum bet being twice that of the previous bet or raise.
 
Betting Stakes The dollar limits of all bets and raises permitted.
 
Betty Hutton Stud game with nines and fives wild.
 
Bicycle The poker hand A2345. This is the lowest possible straight. Also known as Wheel.
 
Bid In split-pot poker, to declare for high or low.
 
Big Bill Term for a hundred or thousand dollar bill.
 
Big Blind In flop games, two blind bets are posted before any cards are dealt. The larger of the two bets is placed by the player sitting in the second seat, clockwise from the dealer. The big blind is usually the size of the minimum bet on the first round of betting.
   
Big Bobtail Hand containing a four-card straight flush.
 
Big Full The highest possible full house.
 
Big One A thousand dollars.
 
Big Slick A starting hand containing an ace and king.
 
Bill A hundred dollars.
 
Bird on a Stick The starting hand containing seven and two.
 
Black When referring to chips, black usually stands for $100 casino chips.
 
Blackjack The starting hand of ace and jack.
 
Blank A card that is useless or does not offer any value to any of the players' hands.
 
Blaze A full house containing all picture cards.
 
Blind (Bet) The forced or mandatory bets in Hold'em games that take the place of an ante. Typically these bets are placed by one or two of the players immediately to the left of the dealer. Blind bets are placed before each new hand is dealt. See Big Blind and Small Blind.
 
Blind Raise When a player raises without looking at his hand.
 
Blind Game A game with uses a blind.
 
Blind Shuffle A cheater's shuffle used to stack cards or to leave stacked cards undisturbed after shuffling.
 
Blind Tiger Draw poker with a blind open and a blind raise.
 
Blood Poker A high-stake poker game played more for money than for social reasons.
 
Bluff To make a bet or raise with a weak hand that you hope is not called by your opponents. The intention of a bluff is to win a pot because everyone else folds.
 
Board 1. The poker table.
2. All the face-up cards on the table in a Hold'em or Omaha game. (also Board Cards)
 
Board Cards The cards in the middle of the table that are shared by everyone.
 
Boat A full house
 
Bolt To fold
 
Bone A white poker chip, typically the lowest denomination chip.
 
Book A three card draw
 
Boost To raise
 
Border Work Markings made by cheaters to the printed borderline of cards to identify their value.
 
Bottom Deal A cheater who deals cards off the bottom o the deck
 
Bottom Pair A Pair consisting of the lowest card on the Flop and one of your hole cards.
 
Bottom Pair A pair consisting of the lowest card on the flop and one of your hole cards.
 
Boxed Card A card that appears face up in the deck where all the other cards are facedown.
 
Boy A jack.
 
Break 1. Betting very forcefully in order to win a huge pot, often putting your opponent all-in.
2. This also can mean killing another player's spirits by beating him or her into submission. For example, if a player consistently loses over a night and loses a lot of money, that player may be considered 'broken.'
 
Broken Game A game no longer in action.
 
Brick and Mortar Refers to a land-based casino.
 
Broadway A best possible straight from ten to ace.
 
Buckets A pair of fours
 
Bug A limited wild card represented by the Joker. In high-hand poker as an ace or as a wild card for filling straights and flushes. See also Wild Card.
 
Bull A player is frequently raises
 
Bullet(s) An ace or pair of aces.
 
Bull the Game To bluff or bet aggressively.
 
Bump To raise
 
Buried Card A card randomly inserted in the deck
 
Burn After the initial round of cards is dealt and before the community cards are dealt, the top card from the deck is discarded face down. It is done as security against any player recognizing or glimpsing the next card to be used on the board.
 
Burned, Burnt, or Burn Card A card dealt face down into the discards. (see Burn)
 
Bust To run out of money.
 
Busted Hand A worthless hand.
 
Butcher Boy A form of poker where four of a kind is needed to win.
 
Button A disk used to indicate who is the dealer in the round. At most casinos, the players themselves do not deal the cards, the button then rotates around the table to indicate who is theoretically in the dealer's seat. This player acts last in the round of betting.
 
Buy To buy the pot is to make a large enough bet hoping that other players would be unlikely to call.
 
Buy In 1. To purchase chips at the start of a game.
2. The minimum amount of money required to join a poker game.
 
By Me An expression meaning to pass or abstain from betting.
