| Ace High |
A five-card hand with the high card of an ace which does not contain a pair or higher ranking combination. |

| Aces full |
A full house with aces over any pair. |
|
|
| Aces Up |
A hand with two pairs, one of which is aces. |
|
|
| Aggregate Limit |
Total payout liability of a casino during any one game. |
|
|
| Action |
1. The betting, raising and calling in a hand.
2. A game with a lot of action is a game with a lot of money changing hands.
3. The dealer may call "Your action" or "Gimme some action" which is asking for bets to be placed, called or raised.
4. Doing something formally connected with the game that conveys information about your hand may also be considered as having taken action, such as showing your cards at the end of the hand or indicating the number of cards you are taking at draw. |

| Action Spot |
The players' area at the table that is currently placing the bets. |
|
|
| Active Player |
A player who is still in the pot. |
|
|
| Add-on |
The opportunity to buy additional chips in some tournaments. |

| Add-them-up Lowball |
Draw poker where the hand with the lowest point total wins. |
|
|
| Aggressive Action |
A bet or raise that could enable a player to win a pot without a showdown |
|
|
| A-game |
The game with the highest stakes in the house. |
|
|
| Aggressive |
A player who plays aggressively usually bets and raises a lot. |
|
|
| Ajax |
The starting hand containing an Ace and Jack. Also known as Blackjack. |
|
|
| Active Player |
A player who is still in the pot. |
|
|
| Alive Card |
In stud games, a card that has not yet been seen in an opponent's hand and is presumed likely to be still in play. |
|
|
| All In |
When a player bets or calls with all their remaining chips or money on the table into the pot. A player who is all-in in a no limit game cannot be forced out of the pot by more betting. He is eligible to win the portion of the pot he has contributed to. Typically a side pot is created when a player is all-in for any additional higher bets. |

| Alternate Straight |
A five card hand with a sequence of every other card, such as 4, 6, 8, 10, Queen. Also called a Skipper, Dutch Straight or Skip Straight. |

| American Airlines |
The starting hand of two Aces. Also known as Pocket Rockets. |
|
|
| Angle |
A trick, or ethically dubious but technically legal way to increase your expectation of winning at a game. |
|
|
| Announced Bet |
The player verbally makes the bet before putting his money in the pot. |
|
|
| Ante |
A small bet placed into the pot by all players before each hand to seed the pot. Used in games with an ante such as Stud Poker. Hold'em games use a blind to get the initial money into the pot. |
|
|
| Aquarium |
A poker game or room that has new or poor players, often who lose a lot of money. |
|
|
| Around the Corner Straight |
The sequence of cards of jack, queen, king, ace, two - cards running from the highest to the lowest values. |

| Assigned Bettor |
The player who bets first. |
